Retired American Navy Seal Team 3 Commander Jocko Willink did not serve in the military but took note of everything he was thought and build them into books after he retired in 2010. And out of numerous books he has written since 2010, I will be discussing with you my favorite and best Jocko Willink book.
Jocko Willink served in the American military for 20 years: from 1990 to 2010. He was part of the combat action in the Iraq war that forth against the insurgents in Ramadi, he was part of the SEAL team that captured the Russian tanker Volga-Neft-147 in the Gulf of Oman which was carrying Iraqi oil in violation of the United States embargo.
After his service, he was honored with the Silver Medal, Bronze Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
He is now an author, motivational speaker, and weekly podcaster with colleague Brazillian Jiu-Jutsu practitioner Echo Charles, called the Jocko Podcast.

My best Jocko Willink Book
So, my best Jocko Willink’a book so far is The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols: Striving to Become an Eminently Qualified Human (2020). This book is a soldering manual for your life and how to disciple yourself to the max.
It is a 93 pages book published on the 17th, of April 2020 by Jocko Willink and his two contributors: Dave Berke and Sara Armstrong.
The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols is a book that aims to help readers achieve their full potential in every aspect of life. It is divided into three sections:
- The Code, which outlines the principles and values that guide Willink’s philosophy;
- The Evaluation, which provides a self-assessment tool to measure one’s strengths and weaknesses; and
- The Protocols offers practical advice and exercises to improve one’s performance in physical, mental, emotional, and social domains.
The book is not a typical self-help book that promises easy solutions or quick fixes. It is a challenging and demanding book that requires commitment, discipline, and hard work from the reader.
Willink does not sugarcoat the reality of life or the difficulties of achieving excellence. He writes with honesty, clarity, and authority, using examples from his own life and from history to illustrate his points.

- Execute: Take action and implement your plan, following the Code and applying the best practices and techniques for your situation.
- Assess: Review your performance and results, honestly and objectively, identifying what went well and what went wrong.
- Adjust: Learn from your assessment and make adjustments to your plan, your actions, or your mindset, as needed, to improve your performance and outcomes.
The Protocols are a set of best practices and techniques that can help us execute our plan effectively and efficiently. They are not rigid or dogmatic, but rather flexible and adaptable to different scenarios and challenges.
The Protocols are based on the principles of extreme ownership, decentralized command, prioritization, communication, discipline equals freedom, default aggressive, cover and move, simple, prioritize and execute a decentralized command.
Examples of protocols are:
- Extreme Ownership: Take full responsibility for everything that happens under your watch, whether you are in charge or not. Don’t blame others or make excuses. Own the problem and find a solution.
- Decentralized command: Empower your team members to make decisions and take action within their area of responsibility. Don’t micromanage or overcontrol. Trust them to do their job and support them when they need it.
- Prioritization: Focus on the most important tasks first, based on their impact and urgency. Don’t get distracted by trivial or irrelevant matters. Do what matters most.
- Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively with your team members and other stakeholders. Don’t assume or guess. Verify information and clarify expectations. Share information and feedback regularly.
- Discipline equals freedom: Develop habits of discipline in your personal and professional life. Don’t let laziness or complacency take over. Follow routines and schedules that help you achieve your goals. Discipline gives you more freedom in the long run.
- Default aggressive: Be proactive and decisive in your actions. Don’t wait for permission or approval. Take initiative and make things happen. Default to action rather than inaction.
