Dr. Rose-Mary Owusuaa Mensah Gyening is the first woman to graduate with a Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
How does this woman able to manage her academics with the raising of kids? Disclosing a post on her Facebook page, Dr. Rose-Mary Gyening said it was determination and passion that make her the mark despite the challenges.
”I am the first female to graduate with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, KNUST,” she stated.
She proceeded: ”For me, the most important [thing] is to hold the door for many ladies to pass through! There have been ups and downs. I have had to combine my studies (both master’s (abroad) and Ph.D. with taking care of my children and managing my home.”
With her astounding success, Dr. Rose- Mary has got the chance to join the ranks of women pursuing programs and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) worldwide.
”Several women have done it, and I have also been able to do it,” she added.
She expresses gratitude to God, her entire family, and loved ones who motivated her to achieve this great success.
”Today, I graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from KNUST. It has not been easy, but God has been faithful. I am very grateful to my family and loved ones for encouraging me to go this far. We made history together!”
She continued to motivate women who want to pursue careers in STEM programs to keep pushing, and they will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Although Computer Science is a male’s dominant field of study, women should change the narrative.
”Computer Science is largely a male-dominated field, but we are changing the narrative! So don’t give up, push harder, and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.
